For West Ham supporters, this season has been one of ups and downs. After such an excellent first season under Croatian manager Slaven Billic, and a move to the highly anticipated London Stadium, West Ham fans were hoping to see a new era at the club blossom.

With European football secured, Hammers fans expected the team to push on, but problem after problem has reared its head this season. From injuries, to the Dimitri Payet saga, and now the Hammers are battling it out for for mid-table.

Looking back to happier times, HITC Sport has been taking a look at some ex-West Ham players who fans might like to see back at the club. We’ve picked our top three, but is there anyone we’ve missed? Let us know your thoughts in the comments section below!

1. Rob Green

Joining the Hammers in 2006 from Norwich City, Rob Green played some of his best football at West Ham United, after making 219 appearances for the London club. Earning plenty of England caps during his time at Upton Park, Rob Green made his name as one of the best English goalkeepers in the Premier League, before departing for Queens Park Rangers in 2012. After four years at Loftus Road, Green’s stock fell after a number of shaky performances, partially down to playing in one of the worst defence’s in the league. Now rebuilding himself at Leeds United, could Rob Green work his way back to the level that West Ham fans need from a goalkeeper?

2. Carlos Tevez

Taking part in one of the biggest shock transfers in Premier League history, eyes were all on Alan Pardew and West Ham United when they completed the signing of Argentinian striker Carlos Tevez in 2006. Making 26 appearances for the Hammers, Tevez quickly became a fan favourite, scoring 7 goals. The Argentinian then went on to Manchester United, scoring 16 goals, Manchester City, scoring 58 goals, and Juventus, scoring 39 goals. Now plying his trade in China, could Tevez ever be tempted back to the Premier League?

3. Javier Mascherano

Accompanying Carlos Tevez in that shock transfer announcement, Argentinian midfielder Javier Mascherano joined West Ham United from Corinthians in 2006. Making just 5 appearances for the Hammers, Mascherano didn’t exactly set London alight, and soon departed for Liverpool. However, at the Reds, Mascherano began to show his class, and soon earned himself a move to Spanish giants FC Barcelona. Making over 180 appearances for Barca over the last seven years, Mascherano has flourished into one of the world’s best defenders, and even served as the Captain of Argentina between 2008 and 2011.
