3 areas Liverpool need to strengthen to get even better

Liverpool tore up the Premier League in 2019/20, despite not making a significant senior signing the summer before.

With the bulk of his squad at a good age and the current financial uncertainty, it appears Jurgen Klopp may keep his powder dry once again during the current transfer window.

That said, here are three areas of the Reds’ squad which could do with beefing up to ensure they’re even better equipped to win the title again.

Cover at left back

Liverpool let Alvaro Moreno go in 2019 and did not bring in a replacement.

That meant when Andy Robertson was out – which fortunately for Klopp, wasn’t often – they lacked balance and attacking thrust down that flank.

For a team such as Liverpool, where their creativity has been largely outsourced from central midfield to full back, that’s a problem.

BBC are among those reporting Anfield interest in Jamal Lewis of Norwich, mooting the prospect of a part swap deal with Yasser Larouci going the other way.

Liverpool have form in signing relegated players and Lewis could well fit the bill on that score once again. They need cover for Robertson.

Versatile attacking backup

Buying players who won’t automatically go into the first team but still possess the right quality is tricky.

Liverpool didn’t land Timo Werner and part of that was because he wouldn’t be guaranteed a starting place – and would be a very expensive backup.

Divock Origi is a cult hero, but represents a large drop off in quality should any of the front three get injured for any length of time.

With Xherdan Shaqiri seemingly out of favour and Harry Wilson not setting the world alight at Bournemouth, Klopp could do with an alternative in attack.

Central defence

Dejan Lovren’s departure has left Liverpool with just three senior central defenders.

That is one area they could spend major money in pursuit of an upgrade on Joe Gomez – as good as he is – to partner Virgil van Dijk.

They may also decide that more depth is the order of the day, to avoid a situation where Sepp van den Berg or Ki-Jana Hoever are thrust into the fray too early in their development.

There aren’t too many places where Liverpool could improve their first XI, so refreshing the squad and beefing up its depth should be where Klopp keeps his focus as he goes in search of back-to-back titles.
