Leeds United are closing in on the signing of AZ Alkmaar defender Pantelis Chatzidiakos after he agreed to join.
AZ Alkmaar ace Pantelis Chatzidiakos has accepted an offer to join Leeds United but a fee hasn’t yet been agreed.
That is according to a report from Sportime over in Chatzidiakos’s native Greece, who claim that the defender has accepted a move to Elland Road.
It’s stated that Leeds have currently offered a deal worth around €2.5million (£2.15million) for Chatzidiakos.
However, AZ want a deal of in the region of €3million to €4million – around £2.6million to £3.5million.
That means Leeds still have work to do but Chatzidiakos appears to be keen on making the move to West Yorkshire.
The report claims that Chatzidiakos has been speaking to Leeds for more than two weeks now in the hope of a deal.
There is no issue between Leeds and Chatzidiakos but the Whites may have to dig a little deeper to get their man.
Who is Leeds United target Pantelis Chadzidiakos?
Chatzidiakos hails from Rhodes in Greece and started out in the Panathinaikos ranks.
AZ pounced to sign Chatzidiakos at the age of just 14 back in 2011 and he has been coming up in the club’s ranks ever since.
The 6ft 1in defender has now racked up more than 200 appearances for AZ, bagging five goals and nine assists along the way.
Whilst most of those games have been as a centre back, Chatzidiakos has already played as a right back too.
That versatility may appeal to Daniel Farke, who is looking for defensive help after losing Robin Koch and Maximilian Wober this summer.
Chatzidiakos has picked up 27 caps for Greece but actually started out as a Netherlands youth international before switching to the country of his birth.
Chatzidiakos helped AZ reach the Europa Conference League semi-finals last season and was twice named in the Eredivisie Team of the Month.
Leeds are now looking to give the 26-year-old a chance in English football with Chatzidiakos out of contract next summer.
