£29m player left out of squad, after Sky claim Tottenham want to sign him

Tottenham Hotspur supporters may have had reason to be interested in Chelsea’s team sheet as well as their own last night, as Antonio Rudiger was left out of Frank Lampard’s side’s squad.

Tottenham have been heavily linked with Rudiger recently, with Sky suggesting that Jose Mourinho’s side are interested.

And the £29 million German defender’s (BBC Sport) chances of breaking back into Chelsea’s team were surely dented by Lampard’s team selection yesterday.

Rudiger was overlooked in favour of Chelsea’s other options for a game against Tottenham, which they subsequently went on to lose on penalties.

The Blues’ team selection was surely an indication that Rudiger could well depart before transfer deadline day, but whether that will be for Tottenham remains to be seen.

Chelsea may be reluctant to strengthen a direct rival in the league, although Spurs do seem one of the strongest suitors for the central defender.

If Rudiger was to move to Tottenham then he will be in competition with the likes of Eric Dier, Japhet Tanganga, Toby Alderweireld and Davinson Sanchez for a first-team place.
