It looks like Shkodran Mustafi is about to join a new club, after being released by Arsenal this year.
The Gunners terminated Mustafi’s £90,000-a-week contract in January, by virtue of the fact that Mikel Arteta had no intention of ever using the player.
He joined Schalke on a short-term basis but was unable to help them stay in the Bundesliga and has been a free agent most of the summer.
But the Germany international, who spent four-and-a-half years on Arsenal’s books, looks set for a return to Italy.
The former Sampdoria defender is linked with a move to Genoa and according to Primo Canale, it could be done by next week.
Flop
Mustafi clocked over 100 Premier League appearances for Arsenal after joining in a £35 million deal from Valencia in 2016.
But despite a lot of mileage, fans of the Emirates Stadium club never really took to the player, who won a World Cup in 2014.
Considering he cost the club a fortune and Arsenal wound up giving him away for nothing, it has to be noted that he was a major flop not only as a player, but as an investment.
It’s a low-risk, medium reward type-of-situation for the Italian club now that he’s free and hopefully Mustafi – who’s still only 29 – can rebuild his career in Serie A.
