Ivan Toney has been shortlisted for the Championship’s Player of the Season, with Leeds an interested party in his signature and Celtic now ruing missing out on his talents.

The 25-year-old, who has struck 29 goals for promotion-chasing Brentford this season, told talkSPORT that it could have been a lot different for him last summer because he came ‘very close’ to joining Celtic.

Well, those in the Celtic boardroom, especially after the disastrous season they have had, will be kicking themselves now, as the big fish in the big-money Premier League pond are now looking to lure him towards their direction.

TeamTalk claim that Leeds are one of the clubs interested in the one-time Newcastle player, who has had a taste of top-flight football before.

Toney is heading towards scoring 30+ goals in the league, that is a seriously good feat in any division in the world.

And if his Brentford side cannot manage to earn promotion to the Premier League – their only chance is via the play-offs – then it would be a big surprise if Toney stays on in England’s capital with the Bees this summer.

Given the volume of goals Toney has scored, there’s no doubt that he now deserves another shot at Premier League football.

And with Leeds having the money to splash, like they did last summer, then it might just be a great fit for both parties.

But with the likes of Arsenal also lurking around the corner then it might not be an easy battle to win for Leeds if they do push to sign him this summer.

Nonetheless, given the remarkable season Toney has had in England’s second-tier, he may not even walk away with the POTS award because a certain Emi Buendia, who has helped Norwich return to the Premier League, might be holding that gong aloft.
