Sunderland missed out on signing Yann M’Vila on deadline day.

Failing to sign a striker to support Jermain Defoe was one obvious error, but another quite clearly appears to be their inability to re-sign Yann M’Vila.

M’Vila was a regular last season for the Black Cats, making 37 out of a possible 38 Premier League appearances.

M’Vila had been at Sunderland last season on a season long loan from Rubin Kazan, and had been expected to complete a permanent deal this summer.

Yet this never materialised, with the Black Cats failing to push through their interest in the 26-year-old, with The Mail reporting they baulked at the £8.5 million price tag on deadline day, much to M’Vila’s frustration.

Sunderland have since failed to show they were fine without the midfielder, and with each passing game, the steel he could have brought to the side is repeatedly shown to be missing.

Against Arsenal at the weekend they shipped four goals, three in quick succession, and while M’Vila is not a miracle worker, he could have made the side a lot tougher to break down.

M’Vila may be better off out of it, but he was an obvious signing for Sunderland if they were hoping to keep the momentum up they showed late last season, and by time January comes around, it may be too late to correct their mistake.
