Tottenham Hotspur were well and truly beaten by Manchester United on Wednesday evening in a game that was largely one-way traffic.

Indeed, the Red Devils were all over Spurs at Old Trafford in a masterful performance orchestrated by Bruno Fernandes.

Fernandes was the best player on the pitch against Spurs, and, to be honest, this was arguably one of the performances of the season.

Fernandes ran the show in an attacking sense. He had six shots, scoring one, while he set a season-record of nine key passes – a higher tally than any other player has managed in the Premier League this term.

The Portuguese midfielder wowed on Wednesday, and his performance is all the more painful for Spurs supporters due to the fact they almost signed Fernandes in 2019.

The player himself even went on the record about the failed transfer recently in an interview with The Athletic.

“Obviously I wanted to go to the Premier League. The manager, Mauricio Pochettino, was the one who wanted me there. It was a good offer but Sporting tried their best to keep me,” Fernandes said.

“The president (Frederico Varandas) spoke with me but he spoke with me on the wrong day. It was the day after they decided to refuse the offer from Tottenham and I was really angry. Luckily for me, the manager (Marcel Keizer) was the right one at the right time.”

Of course, since joining United, Bruno has been a real star for the Red Devils, but now, he’s shown Spurs first-hand what they missed out on when failing to sign him that summer.

Spurs have shown a real lack of a cutting edge this season, and many have called for Fabio Paratici to sign a number 10 and switch to a 3-5-2, but sadly, Spurs don’t have that luxury right now.

However, if they had Fernandes on their books that would be a seamless transition, but unfortunately for the north Londoners, they couldn’t get that deal over the line at the time.
