Andy Halliday has revealed to Open Goal that one rarely-seen Rangers attacker was simply different class on the training ground.

The Gers signed Greg Stewart as their third-choice striker last summer.

Despite being a seasoned Premiership player, Rangers boss Steven Gerrard only started the 30-year-old on three occasions in the league.

Stewart was stuck behind Alfredo Morelos and Jermain Defoe with regards to Gerrard’s options for that number nine role.

But Halliday, released by the Ibrox club in recent months, has said that you’d never have guessed that Stewart was a bit-part player by how good he looked in training at Auchenhowie, noting that only Defoe was a better finisher than him.

He said: “Greg Stewart is one of the best trainers every day. I couldn’t speak highly enough of him. In terms of a finisher he’s probably second to Jermain Defoe as the second best at the football club.”

Stewart might be in trouble with regards to staying at Rangers beyond this summer.

That’s because Florian Kamberi – who spent the second half of last season on loan at Ibrox – is potentially heading back to Glasgow on a permanent basis.

And you have to think that Stewart would then be fourth choice and probably surplus to requirements – that is, if Morelos stays.
