It was reported three weeks ago that Tottenham Hotspur were eyeing up Romelu Lukaku as a potential replacement for Harry Kane.
Kane effectively confirmed toward the end of last season that he wanted to leave Spurs.
The Lilywhites, who haven’t won anything since 2008, finished seventh in the Premier League table and will compete in the Europa Conference League next term.
And according to La Repubblica in Italy, Tottenham were flirting with the idea of signing the Inter Milan hitman, who won a Serie A title under Antonio Conte last term.
The 28-year-old scored 30 goals in 44 games for Inter during the 2020-21 campaign and has already hit three goals for Belgium during Euro 2020.
But does he belong in a ‘world class’ bracket? According to the player, yes.
Lukaku has told The Sun that his goalscoring is unfairly dismissed as simple ‘good form’ and believes that he is on par with some of the world’s finest hitmen – including the Tottenham player.
He said: “When they talk about Lewandowski, Benzema, Suarez, Kane, they would say it’s world class level and with me it’s always about being in good form. In the last two years I think I have shown it’s not just good form. I belong with that group, I am at that level.”
Conte
It must be noted that the speculation about joining the North Londoners came about while Conte was also linked to Tottenham.
But despite Conte being off their radar for now, things haven’t changed all that much.
Kane is still more than likely going to leave and therefore Spurs will still need a top-quality replacement.
And with Inter in serious financial trouble, the big Belgian certainly isn’t guaranteed to be at San Siro come the start of next season.
That isn’t to say that he’s going to Tottenham but just because Conte won’t be, it doesn’t mean it’s totally off the table for Lukaku.
