If Loris Karius’s Liverpool career wasn’t over before – it is now.
The German goalkeeper has been left out of Jurgen Klopp’s Champions League squad for the 2021-22 campaign.
It is the first time Klopp has excluded Karius entirely, considering he was on loan for the past three seasons at various clubs.
The 28-year-old hasn’t played for Liverpool since that Champions League final defeat by Real Madrid in 2018, where he made two shocking errors in a 3-1 loss.
And, although he’s back on Merseyside after failing to get a summer move, the fact Klopp has left him out speaks volumes.
His three goalkeepers for the group stage are Alisson, Adrian and Caoimhin Kelleher – and the fact the latter got in ahead of Karius is evidence his race is run once and for all at Anfield.
It’s a little sad and a lot of Liverpool fans expressed regret over Klopp’s decision on Twitter, in spite of his disastrous showing in Kiev three years ago.
But clearly Klopp prefers the 22-year-old Irish keeper over him.
Karius is now the Reds’ fourth-choice option between the sticks – at best – and with his contract expiring next summer, it’s extremely likely that Liverpool fans will never see him on the bench again, let alone the pitch.
It’s a sad end to what was once a promising career at Anfield.
