A Premier League goalkeeper has revealed that he grew up supporting Arsenal and Liverpool.

David Raya of Brentford admitted that he was always a lover of Premier League football and used to have a particular fondness for the Gunners and Liverpool, in particular.

When asked if he supports Real Madrid, the 27-year-old told La Vanguardia: “That’s not true. I’ve followed the Premiership since I was a kid and I like Liverpool and Arsenal. I watch La Liga but without colours.”

This is particularly interesting from a Gunners perspective because, well, the North Londoners tried to sign him on a number of occasions.

Back in 2020, The Guardian reported that the Emirates Stadium outfit had ‘multiple’ offers rejected by their fellow Londoners.

Arsenal were, at the time, in the market for a long-term replacement for Emiliano Martinez, who had just joined Aston Villa in a £20 million deal.

And although Mikel Arteta and Edu failed to land the Spaniard, they did sign Alex Runarsson in what proved an awful piece of business by the duo.

However, they got it right eventually by signing Aaron Ramsdale in a £30 million deal during the summer of 2021.

And considering how brilliant Ramsdale has been, suffice to say that many Arsenal supporters have probably forgotten that Raya was ever a target.
