Newcastle United will be looking to really push on in 2017, with the help of some quality January additions.
The Magpies have been on a worrying run of late, and now sit two points behind Brighton & Hove Albion, having played a game more than the league leaders.
And the Chronicle are reporting that Rafa Benitez wants to help address their slide by making three January signings, including a striker.
While Newcastle have the magnificent Dwight Gayle amongst their ranks, were he to suffer an injury or suspension, they would lack a certain level of pace and goalscoring know-how in the forward department.
Hull City’s Abel Hernandez
A smart acquisition for Benitez this month could be Hull City’s want-away striker Abel Hernandez.
The 26-year-old Uruguayan’s future is still up in the air, with many clubs believed to be interested in securing his services (Daily Mail).
He is a lively, willing runner, who has fantastic aerial ability, and a keen eye for goal.
For one reason or another, he has failed to live up to his potential on Humberside, however, and it is quite clear to see that a change of scenery and a fresh start is what Hernandez needs to reignite his career.
Hull’s Abel Hernandez celebrates
The Uruguayan has scored 25 goals in 74 league outings for the Tigers, which is still fairly respectable, considering the side that he has been playing for.
He would provide the Magpies with a totally different option in forward areas, and could form a formidable partnership with Gayle, should a move come to fruition.
His contract at the KCOM Stadium expires in the summer of 2018, so Newcastle would have every chance of tempting Hull into selling, should they make an offer for the striker this month.
