Could Jan Bednarek swap warming Southampton’s bench to starting for Aston Villa before transfer deadline day?
The 26-year-old is a transfer target of Aston Villa, who are searching for another centre-back this summer following the long-term injury to recent capture, Diego Carlos.
Well, Bednarek started Southampton’s opening two games of the new Premier League season, but he is now on the subs bench, including during his side’s 1-0 defeat to Manchester United on Saturday.
It has been suggested that Villa are ‘optimistic’ about securing the signing of Bednarek before next Thursday’s deadline – he is the international teammate of Poland’s new right-back, Matty Cash.
Both Villa and Southampton have started the new Premier League season in a pretty poor manner – Ralph Hasenhuttl’s side are sitting 14th from four matches with four points.
On the other hand, Steven Gerrard has watched his team pick up three points from their opening three games and more trouble will be on the horizon if they lose to West Ham on Sunday.
ASTON VILLA SHOULDN’T SIGN BEDNAREK
Villa are in a pretty difficult position because they have just splashed big money on a new centre-back and he is out of action for the foreseeable before he could even complete 90 minutes at Villa Park.
It also needs to be remembered that Carlos at 29 was signed to take the club to the next level right here and now, therefore, his potential replacement, has to be experienced and on paper better than what Gerrard is already working with.
On paper, Bednarek isn’t that answer, even if he has a healthy amount of Premier League experience under his belt, but PSG’s Abdou Diallo fits that bill, and so does West Ham United’s rock, Craig Dawson.
Those two have been linked with a move to B6, so Gerrard and Co. have a few big calls to make before next week’s deadline.
