Nottingham Forest and Newcastle battled over the signing of Renan Lodi back in the summer.
According to The Athletic, the Magpies ended up withdrawing from the race due to concerns over how long it would take the Brazil international to adapt to life in English football.
Nottingham Forest eventually signed Lodi on a season-long loan from Atlético Madrid, with Steve Cooper holding an option to buy the South American for £25m at the end of the campaign.
Now, the 24-year-old probably wishes Newcastle didn’t pull out of the race to sign him.
Renan Lodi may now regret Nottingham Forest move
Well, the Nottingham Forest No.32 has discovered that he will not be adding to his 16 caps for Brazil in Qatar later this month.
Tite has excluded the left-back from his 26-man squad, despite naming him in some of his squads earlier this year.
In our view, Lodi’s exclusion is down to his underwhelming performances for Nottingham Forest since he arrived at the City Ground in August.
The Brazilian has made five starts in the Premier League so far this season, but he has failed to impress as Nottingham Forest sit bottom of England’s top-flight.
In stark contrast, Newcastle currently sit third in the Premier League – losing just one game from 14 so far – and look well placed to qualify for the Champions League in 2023.
In that respect, you can’t help but wonder if Lodi would’ve been in a better environment to thrive had he joined the Magpies, where Eddie Howe has his men playing far better than Cooper has his side performing.
Nottingham Forest must pick Renan Lodi up
Lodi is yet to officially comment on his World Cup rejection, but an Instagram post from Emerson Royal at Tottenham suggests he is gutted about missing out.

The Spurs No.12 sent his international colleague a message telling him that he is “phenomenal” and “weeping only lasts a night, but joy arrives in the morning” – suggesting he is devastated at the news.
Hopefully, Cooper can find a way to help Lodi channel this sadness into positive energy, and it can result in the pair lifting Nottingham Forest away from the bottom of the Premier League.
