Pedro Chirivella is beginning to prove why Liverpool wanted to keep him at Anfield 18 months ago.
Liverpool had no choice but to release the 24-year-old in the summer of 2020.
The Anfield outfit had offered him a five-year contract extension [Goal] but the Spaniard had his heart set on regular football and wound up joining Nantes in Ligue 1.
And what a good decision that looks like being.
Chirivella impressed in a major way on Saturday night in helping inspire his French outfit to a 3-1 victory over Paris Saint-Germain.
The likes of Neymar, Kylian Mbappe and Lionel Messi were all present for Mauricio Pochettino’s side, but the hosts recorded a massive victory nonetheless.
Chirivella, who joined Liverpool as a teenager under Brendan Rodgers, clocked a passing success rate of 87 percent [WhoScored] and also set up one goalscoring chance, earning a 7/10 rating by France-based publication L’Equipe.
As a defensive midfielder, only conceding once against a three-pronged attack of Neymar, Messi and Mbappe is definitely a feather in Chirivella’s cap.
And although you can’t argue that Liverpool were wrong to release him, considering they actually wanted to keep the Spanish pitbull on Merseyside, the player is certainly thriving since leaving Jurgen Klopp’s side.
