Alfie Whiteman has returned to Tottenham after spending 18 months on loan at Swedish side Degerfors in which he really struggled to impress – and Japhet Tanganga has posted his reaction with a two-word comment on Instagram.
Whiteman, 24, has still only ever managed one game for Tottenham’s senior side – coming off the bench during Jose Mourinho’s era. He has been more regularly seen in the 21’s, clocking up 30 appearances for Spurs’ second string.
At the start of February 2021, Whiteman decided to go out on loan and pursue first-team football. He joined top-tier Swedish side Degerfors. After 18 months, he only managed to play 34 times for them – conceding a huge 64 goals.
Indeed, only three clean sheets came Whiteman’s way. Not a good record. He is now back at Tottenham where he will see his contract expire at the end of the current campaign. Tottenham confirmed he is one of five to return to training.
Following that confirmation, Whiteman took to Instagram. He posted a series of pictures, which shows the goalkeeper having shaven his head – making some saves in training. It will be interesting to see what happens in January.
Whiteman returns to Tottenham after 18 months: Tanganga reaction
Whiteman has little chance of a future at Spurs. That is, despite Hugo Lloris and Fraser Forster – the two first-choice goalkeepers – having a combined age of 69. Brandon Austin recently signed a new contract for Tottenham.
The 23-year-old, who has represented United States at Under-18 level, is the club’s third-choice option. If and when Lloris does go, he will be replaced in the transfer window. Whiteman’s contract situation means a move is expected.
January is likely to see Whiteman finally go on a permanent basis. While Spurs have six months left on his deal – a fee for Whiteman is unlikely to be required. But, he is back at Spurs, and Tanganga has reacted to his Instagram post.
