Marko Grujic has admitted that he left Liverpool after seeing his parent club sign Thiago Alcantara, but believes that he still would’ve played a lot of football this season.

The Serbia intnernational joined Porto on loan from Liverpool this past summer, after a couple of strong years with Hertha Berlin in the Bundesliga.

As a midfielder, Grujic admitted that the sight of Thiago arriving at Melwood was enough to make him not want to stay at Liverpool for the 2020-21 campaign due to concerns over his playing time.

But the 29-year-old has only started two Premier League games this season due to injury, while Fabinho, another midfielder, has spent virtually the whole campaign in central defence due to Virgil van Dijk’s injury.

Playing regularly might not have been a problem for the former Red Star Belgrade man, who admitted to Kurir that he may have been in Jurgen Klopp’s best XI regularly.

He said: “When Thiago Alcantara came from Bayern, I estimated that there would not be much space for me. I didn’t want to gamble. I see now that there are a lot of injured players at Anfield. It is certain that I would get a chance, but I could not have foreseen that.”

Things haven’t been going all that well for the 24-year-old in Portugal.

So far, Grujic has started only two league games for Porto, with his six appearances overall totalling only 157 minutes.
