Pedro Caixinha needs a goalscorer and the former England under-21 international has been in fine form for Omonia Nicosia.

One of Rangers’ main problems this season has been the club’s lack of a potent goalscorer. Celtic’s Moussa Dembele and Leigh Griffiths put the Rangers attackers to shame when it comes to goalscoring in recent times. In fact Liam Boyce, Louis Moult, Adam Rooney, Kris Boyd and many others come above Rangers strikers in the Scottish Premiership scoring ranks.

Rangers need to bring in a goalscorer and they would not go wrong by looking at one of European football’s top goalscorers this season.

Matt Derbyshire is best known recently for uneventful spells at Rotherham United and Nottingham Forest.

But the 30-year-old has been on fire in Cypriot football this season with Omonia Nicosia. Not many strikers have scored more league goals than the former England under-21 international this season. The list is an elite with the likes of Edinson Cavani, Lionel Messi and Robert Lewandowski present.

He has scored 21 times in 27 league games and overall has 24 goals this season in 35 games – a sensational record.

Rangers fans may scoff at the standard in Cypriot football, but many would argue it is on par with, if not better than, that in Scotland.

Omonia are only fifth in the league so European football is looking unlikely. Rangers could offer him a crack at the Europa League next term and the chance to play for one of Britain’s most historic teams.

If Rangers are looking for a goalscorer, then Derbyshire might just be the perfect option.
