The Mexican has more followers on Twitter than Alexis Sanchez.
Miguel Layun
Newcastle United have recently been linked with a move to sign Miguel Layun from Porto. The Chronicle yesterday relayed reports from Mexico and Portugal which suggested that Layun was the subject of interest from Newcastle, with the attacking full-back a target that excited Newcastle fans.
The interest in the former Watford star will also excite the marketing and commercial team at Newcastle, because Layun is in fact one of the world’s most popular footballers.

His presence in the Mexico national team, a massive country which is football mad and a developing market in the game, makes Layun something of a superstar.
The prime example is his Twitter account. Layun has an incredible 2.33 million followers on his account. Compare that to Newcastle United’s top scorer Dwight Gayle, who has just 73,000. In fact, it is even more than a global superstar like Arsenal forward Alexis Sanchez who has just 2 million.

The commercial opportunities that Layun would present Newcastle alone will likely end up paying for any transfer fee they have to spend to bring him to St James’ Park.
He is also pretty good at football, having played 22 times for Porto last season and he also has 46 caps for the Mexico national team.
It is hard to find reasons for Newcastle to not sign the 28-year-old this summer.
