Tottenham Hotspur winger Lucas Moura was a rare marquee signing made in the January transfer window by the club.

He had a low key start at Spurs, used sparingly after lacking fitness due to being dropped for the first half of the campaign by PSG.

His second season at Tottenham is shaping up nicely with the Brazilian showing what he is capable of with a two goal display against Roma this week.

If he can continue his success, then Lucas could prompt a change of policy at Tottenham for more January signings.

Spurs are notoriously slow every summer and this year is no different, much to the frustration of fans.

No players have been signed yet, and while there probably will be additions, they will have missed pre-season and getting to know manager Mauricio Pochettino, his methods and expectations.

In previous years this has been an issue, with Fernando Llorente, Moussa Sissoko, Georges-Kevin N’Koudou and Serge Aurier among those to start poorly after signing in late August. Going back further there are more too.

Perhaps those players just weren’t up to scratch, and Davinson Sanchez was an exception in that he did settle instantly, but by signing players late, Spurs are not putting their new additions in the best position to succeed.

Accepting that their late summer buys will likely continue, Moura’s success can prompt a strategy shift to sign more players in January.

The benefits are that if anything is contributed straight away then it is a bonus, but they will be ready and raring to go in pre-season for their first full year, as Lucas Moura is proving.

The Brazilian has to continue his pre-season form beyond one game and into the Premier League for a sustained period. If he can do so, then Spurs should open up to striking more deals like his.
