Everton and Tottenham were both linked to Davy Klaassen in the summer.

Everton acted ahead of Tottenham to win the race to sign Davy Klaassen back in June, but the Dutchman has given the North London side no reason to regret not signing him.

Instead it is the other way around. Klaassen should be lamenting not joining Tottenham instead.

The Telegraph reported Tottenham were taking a ‘keen interest’ in the playmaker, before Everton swooped in.

Klaassen has not scored a single goal or provided an assist yet in seven matches, and that is not just bad luck – he has barely shown any signs of the quality which made him a standout player at Ajax.

A lucky escape for Tottenham then? Perhaps not.

At Spurs, Klaassen would have had a more defined role and better quality players around him.

How could a playmaker as talented as Klaassen not thrive behind the irrepressible Harry Kane?

Everton simply do not have a striker even half as good as Kane, and as such, no focal point for Klaassen to play off and link up with.

The players they have used up front have been shuffled around so much there has been no time for Klaassen to develop consistency.

At Tottenham he would have been under far less pressure too, behind his Ajax predecessor Christian Eriksen.

He would have been given more time to prove himself as he would have been used more sparingly, and the pressure would be far less intense.

As it is, Klaassen must find a way to get through it and come back better, but it’s hard to argue that he would not have been better off holding out for a move to Tottenham.
