Celtic should look at Sheffield Wednesday’s promising striker Lucas Joao.

Whether Celtic like it or not, when the summer comes they will need to have a plan in place to potentially replace highly rated Frenchman Moussa Dembele.

The prolific striker has been a huge success since signing for the Scottish champions, attracting interest from clubs across Europe.

It would make sense for the club to look at a bargain addition to add to the squad now, and they should strongly consider Sheffield Wednesday forward Lucas Joao.

The promising 23-year-old was snapped up in 2015 from Portuguese club Nacional, and was a lively presence up front for the Owls, netting in a League Cup win over Arsenal.

This season he has struggled for playing time, playing 90 minutes only twice, and only really getting chances with ex-Celt Gary Hooper out with an injury.

As a result Joao is yet to score and add to his six goals in his opening campaign, and is in need of a fresh start.

Sheffield Wednesday are pushing to sign Jordan Rhodes, bidding £8 million according to The Sun, and may yet have an alternative in mind if this is unsuccessful.

This would limit Joao’s opportunities, and already the Daily Mail report Championship side Wigan Athletic are preparing a bid.

Joao could flourish from playing in Scotland in a similar way to how Souleymane Coulibaly excelled at Kilmarnock after unsuccessful spells at Peterborough and Newport County.

He would not necessarily be required as a starter right away, but as a third option behind Dembele and Leigh Griffiths the Portuguese youth international could be a smart and reasonably priced addition for Brendan Rodgers’ side.
