Taiwo Awoniyi has revealed to ESPN that he actually wanted to leave Liverpool permanently this summer, but was told to stay patient by the club.
Awoniyi joined Liverpool in 2015, but he has never made his debut for the Reds due to work permit issues.
The Nigerian forward has, instead, been sent on a series of loan spells across Europe.
Awoniyi was sent out to Union Berlin in the Bundesliga this summer, and the 23-year-old now admits that he is giving up hope of making it at Anfield.
Indeed, the Liverpool forward says that he was disappointed that he only was able to leave on loan in the summer, rather than on a permanent transfer.
“This season was maybe a bit tough to make the decision because honestly, I was hoping to leave permanently,” he said.
“Liverpool have been great, they have been so supportive and we always talk with the director and every time, they tell me to be patient.
“But the reason I discussed something permanent this season was just that I felt most loans I have been to, have not really been the way I want it.
“And I felt like it happens that way because the loan players get less of an advantage than the players of their own club.
“That was what made me think, okay, maybe it’s time to find a home with my family.”
Liverpool are unlikely to stand in Awoniyi’s way, if a club does make a bid to take him permanently.
The youngster has not really shown the sort of form on any of his loan spells which suggests that he would be able to trouble Liverpool’s first-team.
Since moving to Union Berlin, Awoniyi has made six appearances, but has only hit the back of the net once.
