According to Marca, Liverpool asked Real Madrid about signing Federico Valverde last summer.
The Reds could do with adding some young blood to their midfield. Thiago Alcantara and Jordan Henderson are both in their 30s, while Curtis Jones and Harvey Elliott are slightly too young to be relied upon on a weekly basis.
The Merseyside club reportedly asked about Valverde last summer, and that is rather interesting, especially when you consider the fact that the Uruguayan does have some links to Liverpool.
Indeed, the South American actually had an affinity for the Reds during Luis Suarez’s time at the club, while he’s often been compared to Steven Gerrard due to his style of play.
What’s Valverde said?
The midfielder discussed the fact that he has a soft spot for the Reds in an interview with the Daily Mail.
“Uruguayans tend to support the team that has a Uruguayan in it,’ he says. ‘At that moment, because Luis was at Liverpool, we supported Luis. I wanted things to go well for him, I will always do that with a team that has a Uruguayan,” Valverde said.
“It happens with [Edinson] Cavani at Manchester United now too. I want United to win and for him to score goals. That year pretty much the whole country supported Liverpool.”
The midfielder was later asked about the comparisons that have been made with Steven Gerrard.
“I don’t feel like I’m Gerrard. He was a hero for so many people. When I watched him on television I thought he was an incredible player, with those diagonal passes, his shooting, the bursts forward with the ball, I could spend 24 hours a day just watching him play,” Valverde said.

Great fit
We can see why Liverpool were asking for Valverde after reading these comments.
The South American doesn’t seem to agree with the Gerrard comparisons, but if a number of people are pointing out that similarity, then that’s not a coincidence.
Sadly for the Reds, they were knocked back in their approach last summer, but perhaps this is one to keep an eye on in the coming years as he’s clearly a player the Merseyside club like.
