Emre Can has intimated that Liverpool remain in his heart, despite rejecting the chance to stay at Anfield two years ago.

The 26-year-old midfielder spent four years with the Reds but left to join Juventus as a Bosman in the summer of 2018.

Can was a big player for Liverpool, evident by the fact that manager Jurgen Klopp offered him a contract to stay on Merseyside.

But the Germany international, who is now with Borussia Dortmund following a £22 million switch [Goal], elected to join the Italian champions on a free transfer.

The former Bayern Munich and Bayer Leverkusen powerhouse was heavily linked with a January move to Manchester United, arguably Liverpool’s biggest rivals.

But Can has told Sport Bild that his ‘heart wouldn’t allow it’ due to his association with Klopp’s side, insisting that he’d never play for the Red Devils.

He said: “I would never play for United because of my time at Liverpool. My heart would not allow it. The rivalry between those clubs is huge.”

Even though some Liverpool fans weren’t happy with Can for his decision to leave, they will definitely respect his comments here.

Despite leaving, the club clearly left a big mark on him and the fact that he’d refuse to join their enemy is testament to that.
