One of the best players for Ange Postecoglou’s Tottenham Hotspur this season has been Micky van de Ven, and it has now emerged that he could have joined Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool instead.

Micky van de Ven moved to Tottenham Hotspur from VfL Wolfsburg in the summer transfer window.

Tottenham paid an initial transfer fee of £34.5 million for Van de Ven (Sky Sports).

The 22-year-old has been a revelation at Spurs and has been one of the best centre-backs in the Premier League this season.

Liverpool central defender Virgil van Dijk has been impressed with Van de Ven.

Van Dijk and Van de Ven are Netherlands teammates.

Van de Ven has scored one goal in nine Premier League matches for Tottenham this season.

Spurs are at the top of the Premier League table with 23 points from nine matches.

It has now emerged that Liverpool could have signed Van de Ven in the summer transfer window before he moved to Tottenham.

Why Micky van de Ven chose Tottenham Hotspur over Liverpool

The Independent journalist Miguel Delaney has written in his Reading the Game newsletter (12:01 pm, October 27, 2023) that Van de Ven chose Tottenham over Liverpool because of the chance to play more regularly.

Delaney wrote: “Micky van de Ven has been one of the revelations of the season, and it’s all the more admirable since it comes from so resoundingly backing himself.

“Liverpool were very interested in signing the Dutch centre-half but were unwilling to make him a regular starter, given their quality in that area and how he was only 22 with no experience in the Premier League.

“Van de Ven felt he was ready, though to perform at that level so went where he was guaranteed a starting place.

“The decision has meant he has proven one of Tottenham Hotspur’s many defining players so far this season.”

Liverpool are a bigger club than Tottenham Hotspur.

The Reds also win major trophies.

Under manager Jurgen Klopp, Liverpool have won the Premier League and the UEFA Champions League in recent seasons.

Therefore, I have to praise Micky van de Ven for picking Tottenham over Liverpool.

The Dutchman knew what he was capable of and backed himself to become a regular at Spurs.

It shows that Van de Ven is a very confident young defender who knows what he wants from his career.
