According to Tutto Mercato Web, Tottenham scouts were in attendance to watch Italy’s Under-21 side take on Romania’s Under-21 gems on Tuesday.
What’s the story?
Well, the Italian news outlet do not disclose who Tottenham were watching, although there were a number of players who stood out.
With AC Milan and Atletico Madrid also watching, Simone Canestrelli put his name up in lights with what was arguably the best game of his career.
The 21-year-old netted a hat-trick in front of Tottenham’s scouts, which presumably led to them writing his name down – if they hadn’t already.
To make his treble more impressive, Canestrelli isn’t even a forward, nor is he a midfielder – the Italian is a defender!
If he continues to impress on loan at Crotone, then it wouldn’t surprise us to see Spurs monitor him when he returns to Empoli.
Tottenham scouting mission a sign of things to come under Antonio Conte?

With Antonio Conte at the helm, and Fabio Paratici working as Director of Football, there is a strong Italian contingent at Tottenham.
Evidently, that is being represented in the recruitment plans.
In our view, that’s a very sensible move by the north Londoners.

Conte and Paratici are experts of Italian football, and you’d like to think they’d be aware of the next big names on the horizon.
Additionally, Italy have just won EURO 2020, so the nation is clearly full of talented footballers.
Whether it’s Canestrelli, or another Italian wonderkid, don’t be surprised to see them at Hotspur Way sometime in the near future.
