Leeds United are reportedly keen on striker Baghdad Bounedjah.
Leeds United fans may be focused on whether the club will sign Derby County’s Matej Vydra or free agent Abel Hernandez, but the Whites appear to have eyes for another striker.
Vydra appears to be the top target for new boss Marcelo Bielsa, and whilst Hernandez would be a more natural centre forward, a new name has appeared from nowhere.
DZFootball reported on Monday that Leeds are in ‘advanced talks’ to sign Algerian striker Baghdad Bounedjah, who has been hugely prolific over the course of his career.
Bounedjah, 26, started out with hometown club RCG Oran in Algeria, scoring nine goals in 19 games to move on to USM El Harrach, where his goalscoring continued with 18 goals in 54 outings.
A move to Tunisia with Etoile du Sahel followed, and with 46 goals in 75 games, he continued to show his goalscoring prowess, and his record with Al Sadd in Qatar is nothing short of staggering.
With 64 goals in 57 games – including 28 goals in 21 games last season – Bounedjah has been averaging more than a goal a game for Al Sadd, and interest was inevitable at some stage.
An Algerian international with 14 caps to his name, Bounedjah has great movement as a penalty box poacher and deadly finishing, and whilst the Championship would be a step-up in quality, pace and intensity, he has shown that he is now ready for that jump.
Few Leeds fans would have expected an Algerian forward playing in Qatar to be a top target, and he is certainly a surprise name in the frame, but his record to date shows that he is an exciting one.
