Newcastle United transfer target Nicolai Jorgensen discusses his future.
Late in the transfer window, The Chronicle claimed Feyenoord striker Nicolai Jorgensen was keen on joining the club.
Newcastle however did not match Feyenoord’s £20 million asking price for Jorgensen, and he stayed put in Holland.
The Danish striker has been discussing his failed switch again and while he says he is happy to remain at Feyenoord, he leaves the door open for a summer switch should Newcastle revisit their interest.
He told Dutch outlet NOS: “It was more of a matter for my agent and the club, you hear a lot, try to focus, but you’re also a bit confused.
“As long as I am here, I give everything, I am happy here and I am proud to play for Feyenoord, and when the day comes, it is apparently the right time”,
“It’s a dream for every footballer to play in the Premier League, if I keep working hard, there will be a club, I can also compete in another league, I think I’m ready for a next step, but now I’m I am at Feyenoord.”
His club manager Giovanni van Bronckhorst stepped in to add: “He has put Newcastle out of his head.”
What’s next?
Jorgensen’s transfer did not go ahead because Newcastle were unwilling to match Feyenoord’s valuation, but in the Magpies’ defence, nor did any other club.
The striker now has until the end of the season to prove he is worth a big fee.
So far he is lagging behind last season’s tally of 21 goals, with just seven. Feyenoord have slipped from first to fourth.
At the weekend he drew a blank as his side slipped to a 1-0 defeat to Willem II.
Jorgensen does have one more potential trump card, the World Cup.
Strong performances for Denmark at the tournament can be his route to earning a big move if his season in Holland does not finish well.
But Newcastle would be right to remain wary. Signing players off the back of good performances in the Eredivisie and major tournaments are no guarantees for success.
