Callum Wilson has been speaking to the BBC about all things Newcastle, from the transfer window to his own personal fitness.
Interestingly, the £20m man believes the Magpies needed to do more in the January market.
What’s the story?
Well, Wilson feels Newcastle needed to sign another striker in January, in addition to the capture of Chris Wood.
The 29-year-old said: “I was looking forward to the club bringing in another striker as well as Chris Wood. I think we needed one more as well. Unfortunately, we didn’t get that in the attacking area. But I back Woody from now until the end of the season. I also back myself.”
It’s intriguing to hear Wilson demand more competition for his own position, but he clearly backs himself to come out on top against anyone.
In our view, the Magpies did need another striker, but only because of Wilson’s struggles with injury – as good as he is when fit, it’s tough for Eddie Howe to rely on his No.9 being available.
Of course, the free agent market is still open, where former Chelsea hitman Diego Costa is waiting to be snapped up.
As things stand, that would be the only way Newcastle can sign another striker to compete with Wilson, Wood and Dwight Gayle.
Newcastle came close to finding Callum Wilson competition

Amanda Staveley failed to sign another striker for Newcastle, although it was not down to a lack of effort.
The Magpies had a bid accepted by Reims for Hugo Ekitike on deadline day, although he was unsure of the move and decided to stay in France (Sky Sports).
According to The Athletic, a detailed scouting report on Darwin Nunez was also written up, with Newcastle still interested in the Uruguayan.

Furthermore, Fabrizio Romano claimed that Newcastle made a late move for Eddie Nketiah – that deal presumably fell through because of Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang’s departure.
There was certainly a clear effort made to sign a new frontman, but Newcastle were unsuccessful in their attempts.
Only time will tell if that costs them their place in the Premier League.
