The Mirror reported at the end of last month that Everton are plotting a January move for Atletico Madrid striker Kevin Gameiro.

Gameiro scored 16 times last season but has fallen down the pecking order at Atletico this season.

His plight has been so bad that he has played just 27 minutes of a possible 603.

With Diego Costa set to arrive in January from Chelsea, Gameiro’s days look numbered.

Spanish newspaper AS report his fall from grace has been sharper than any other La Liga player.

His continued plight makes it even more important that Everton bring him in to resolve their lack of strikers, especially with Gameiro hoping to salvage hopes of making France’s World Cup squad.

The Mirror’s report had claimed Atletico would ideally want £20 million for Gameiro, but could settle for a loan deal.

Everton would be smart to stump up the cash to secure his services to ensure they are not beaten in the race, especially if they can find a compromise at less than £20 million.

Gameiro’s lack of action will help their cause, although it would be better if he can get playing and keep sharp between now and January, without convincing Atletico he should stay.

At 30, he would not be a long term solution for Everton, but he is a proven goalscorer, and might be just what they need right now.
