Everton’s Abdoulaye Doucoure has revealed what the club’s ‘main goal’ is under Carlo Ancelotti this season.
The Frenchman told Sky Sports that reaching Europe was the Toffees’ primary target for the 2020/21 campaign. The box-to-box midfielder made the revelation following Everton’s impressive 1-0 win over Tottenham on Sunday.
‘Signing James and Allan is a big bonus for us,’ he said. ‘We need to continue this way and achieve good things this season. The club wants to go to Europe – that’s the main goal this season. It’s a great win against a big team.’
Doucoure arrived from Watford in a £20 million deal on September 8, just days before the Merseysiders’ triumphed in north London.
Everton last appeared in Europe in the 2017/18 season under Ronald Koeman, but dropped out of a group containing Lyon, Atalanta and Apollon Limassol, winning just one game.
A sticky period has followed. The likes of Sam Allardyce and Marco Silva have struggled to take Everton back to such heights ever since, but they look all geared up to mount a serious challenge once again.
The club’s main aim – revealed by Doucoure – is definitely achievable with the calibre of players at Goodison Park, and also the pedigree of the man in charge.
Ancelotti, James Rodriguez, Richarlison, Lucas Digne and Allan are names that belong on the European stage, at the very least. In fact, the first two figures have each won the Champions League within the last six years.
Judging by the Toffees’ superb display against Spurs, there is no reason why that ‘main goal’ cannot be achieved.
