Emiliano Martinez has admitted on Twitter that he is ‘disappointed’ by Aston Villa’s dismissal of Steven Gerrard.

The Villans were hammered 3-0 away to Fulham on Thursday night and it was confirmed shortly after that the Liverpool icon would not be taking charge of any more games.

Gerrard reportedly discovered his fate on the Aston Villa bus on their return to the Midlands, according to The Telegraph.

The former Rangers manager quit the Ibrox outfit last November to replace Dean Smith at Villa Park.

And Martinez, a £20 million signing in 2020 [The Guardian], has admitted that he’s sad to see Gerrard go.

The Argentina international posted a heartfelt tweet to his former gaffer.

Neil Critchley is set to take charge of Aston Villa on an interim basis until the club’s hierarchy sort a long-term successor for Gerrard.

According to The Telegraph, the likes of Mauricio Pochettino and Thomas Frank are in the frame.

Hiring Pochettino would be a massive coup, with the Argentine tactician out of work since leaving Paris Saint-Germain a little earlier in 2022.

Frank, on the other hand, is a lesser-known manager, but also a very exciting coach following his heroics at Brentford in recent years.

Aston Villa need new energy and a new direction and whatever happens, they’ll get that irrespective of who comes in.
