As Harry Winks’ future as a Tottenham Hotspur player entered the spotlight this week, it was reported that an historic Spurs target, who plays in the same position, is available once more.
The Telegraph claimed that Winks will ‘look at his circumstances in the January transfer window’, having been told by Gareth Southgate that he must play more to earn a place in England’s European Championship squad.
It is approaching two years since Bild credited Tottenham with an interest in the then Borussia Dortmund midfielder Julian Weigl.
However, Tottenham’s chances appeared to have passed when Weigl joined Benfica for a reported fee of £18 million at the start of 2020.
The German has since played 31 times for the Portuguese side, though he has started just once in the league this season.
And, according to Record, he will be allowed to leave in January – but only for €25m (around £22.4m).
It remains to be seen whether Tottenham – who have replaced Mauricio Pochettino with Jose Mourinho since Bild‘s report – have retained an interest in Weigl, let alone whether they’d be willing to spend £20m-plus to add their options in an already congested part of the pitch.
Though losing Winks could give them something to consider.
