Leeds United director of football Victor Orta has raved about the club’s fans, as quoted in Estadio Deportivo.

Orta has said that Leeds fans are among the top 10 in the world, and he has also praised the Sevilla supporters, having previously worked at the Spanish club.

The Spaniard was appointed as the director of football of Championship club Leeds in May 2017.

Estadio Deportivo quotes Orta as saying: “Leeds is a religion. It’s a Latin club. The truth is that I have been very lucky with the fans.

“Surely, those of Sevilla and those of Leeds are in the top 10 of a possible ranking of world fans: in follow-up, in passion, in songs… That is lucky.”

Meanwhile, Leeds chief executive Angus Kinnear has dismissed suggestions that there will be no promotion from the Championship to the Premier League.

Football in England is suspended at the moment due to the global health crisis, and it remains to be seen when the campaign gets back underway.

Kinnear wrote in The Yorkshire Evening Post: “It seems likely that any return to play will be done against a media backdrop of clubs continuing to publicly champion obstacles to the league’s completion and, if it can’t be concluded, why leagues should be expunged [or relegation and promotion abandoned] as opposed to be decided on sporting merit.

“To date, this has included trying to set the brilliantly audacious precedent that Premier League teams shouldn’t have to play matches if they don’t think they can win them and the equally

“Machiavellian suggestion that a team could refuse to be relegated if they believe that the promoted team is not deserving of being their replacement.”

Promotion push

Leeds are at the top of the Championship table at the moment, and it is very likely that they will clinch automatic promotion to the Premier League if and when the season resumes.

The Whites have been arguably the best team in the second tier of English football so far this campaign, and the players must be looking forward to playing again when it is safe to do so.
