2013 all over again; Tottenham would be making big mistake with £17 million deal mooted for Max Meyer

The Schalke man is a reported target for Tottenham Hotspur.

Spurs are reportedly closely monitoring Max Meyer’s situation at Schalke this summer, and are considering lining up a £17 million bid for the 21-year-old this summer, according to popular football news website Football.London.

Whilst the German is obviously talented, there is an argument to be made that Spurs are once again on the verge of making a big mistake by signing the Schalke forward, much like they did when they brought Erik Lamela to the club way back in 2013.

The Argentine was 21 at the time, as Meyer is now, and was similarly lightweight in stature as the Germany star.

On face value, the Schake man would seem like a useful signing for Tottenham, but a closer looks at his statistics make less-than-impressive reading.

In 164 senior outings for the Bundesliga outfit, he has chipped in with just 21 goals and 23 assists, a rather poor return from someone who has mostly been deployed in an attacking role.

There would surely also be concerns over Meyer’s physique, and whether he would be able to handle the robust nature of the Premier League.

Standing at just 5ft 8in, the four-capped Germany international would have to rely on strength and a low centre of gravity, but at the age of just 21, with his body not yet matured, he might just find it hard to settle in north London.

There must be genuine concerns that Daniel Levy is once again tightening the purse strings and the fact that Meyer is available for around £17 million is what is appealing most to him, in today’s inflated transfer market.

If Spurs do go on to sign the 21-year-old, he could of course go on to become a star in England, and prove everyone wrong.

Tottenham have to be weary though, especially after what has happened with Erik Lamela since he moved to the Premier League.

Despite the German’s seemingly reasonable asking price, it could still be a huge waste of money, and the Lilywhites might just be better served in spending more money on a matured player, who has proven himself at an elite level for a prolonged period of time.
