Liverpool are going to have to pay big if they want to sign Kai Havertz when the transfer window opens.
Despite the global health emergency having a big knock-on effect for the transfer market in football, Bayer Leverkusen aren’t lowering their demands for the 20-year-old gem, it seems.
According to Bild, the Bundesliga club are still demanding £89 million [€100m] for the young playmaker who, according to The Express, is on Liverpool’s radar.
The report adds that Leverkusen have told Havertz that they won’t be selling him for any less than that figure.
The Reds’ most expensive ever signing is Virgil van Dijk right now, following his £75 million move from Southampton two-and-a-half years ago.
But Havertz for £89 million would be Liverpool’s new record holder in that regard, if a move were to go through.
That being said, it seems unlikely that Leverkusen will get anywhere near that amount. When you hear Guillem Balague saying that the likes of Barcelona and Real Madrid are mainly in the market for swap deals, that should illustrate the difficulty facing clubs when it comes to funding big-money moves.
So are the Anfield club going to break their transfer record on Havertz? They might, but not for the foreseeable future.
