Liverpool announced on Tuesday that Rhys Williams had left the club on a season-long loan.
The 20-year-old defender has joined Swansea City in the Championship for the 2021-22 campaign.
Prior to leaving, Liverpool also revealed that their academy product put pen to paper on a new long-term contract on Merseyside.
After it was confirmed, Williams himself said on Twitter that he was delighted to join the club – and here’s how some Liverpool fans responded to the lad on social media:
Writing on the wall
This announcement won’t have surprised many Reds supporters.
Being a centre-back, the writing looked on the wall for Williams for virtually the entire summer.
That’s because at the start of the transfer window, Jurgen Klopp and Michael Edwards signed Ibrahima Konate in a £36 million deal.
And with him also being a central defender, it simply pushed Williams so far down the pecking order that makes it nigh-on impossible for any sort of football this season.
Remember, Virgil van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip are also fit again after injury-hit years last time around, meaning Williams was behind those three, Konate and probably even Nat Phillips, who also extended his contract on Tuesday.
At 20, Williams, who made his Champions League and Premier League debut last season, has a bright future and a stint in the second tier could well do him the world of good in the long term.
