Last night was horrible for Liverpool players.
They were given a Guard of Honour by Manchester City at the Etihad, with this being their first game since becoming Premier League champions last week.
But it wasn’t the best coronation for Liverpool as Pep Guardiola’s side ran out 4-0 winners.
Virtually nobody in red covered himself in glory last night, but one player on the club’s books certainly did.
Herbie Kane, who has been on loan from Liverpool at Hull City since January, starred in his temporary club’s 2-1 win over Middlesbrough earlier on Thursday evening.
The 21-year-old equalised for the Tigers during the first half and, impressively, it was a free kick.
The Kirkby academy product is swiftly establishing himself as a dead-ball specialist, having also scored a brilliant free kick last weekend in a 3-3 draw at Birmingham City.
There were shades of Philippe Coutinho with that goal, as Kane anticipated the wall jumping and therefore drove it underneath the City players, evoking memories of the Brazilian’s ingenious effort away at West Ham United back in 2016.
It remains to be seen whether Klopp has any long-term plans for Kane, but scoring two free kicks within a matter of days is surely a message to the German manager.
He’ll return to Melwood this summer for pre-season and it’ll be fascinating to see if he can impress Klopp up close.
