1pm deadline day news: Everton to up bid for AWOL Zaha; Confusion over Carroll’s Newcastle return and more

A round-up of final-day updates, including potential incomings at Everton, Newcastle United and Burnley.

The Everton-linked winger, Wilfried Zaha, was absent from Crystal Palace’s training session on Thursday, according to Sky Sports.

The Sun reported earlier that Everton were ready to up their offer of £65 million plus players, having previously claimed that was as far as the Toffees would go.

But the reason for Zaha’s alleged absence remains unclear.

Should he join Everton, the Ivorian’s deal could be the biggest to go through on Thursday, which is the final day for incoming transfers in England’s top two divisions.

But he may not be the only player to arrive at Goodison Park, with Everton close to agreeing a permanent move for the Manchester United defender, Marcos Rojo, according to the Independent.

Meanwhile, Andy Carroll looks to be heading back to his beloved Newcastle United.

But while the Sun reports that Carroll’s free transfer return is more likely to happen after the deadline, the Shields Gazette insist that it must be done before then if the striker is to be registered in Newcastle’s 25-man Premier League squad.

Heading back to the north west, Burnley are edging closer to loan deal for the Chelsea midfielder, Danny Drinkwater, according to the Daily Mail.

The newspaper claims Drinkwater’s move to Burnley should be done by the end of today (you would hope so, wouldn’t you?), with another Clarets target, Victor Wanyama, likely to stay at Tottenham Hotspur and potentially join an overseas club after Thursday.

And finally, the former Rangers defender, David Bates, could be heading back to the UK with Wigan Athletic, while the Leicester City left-back, Callum Elder, is nearing a permanent move to Hull City, both according to the Sun (Bates and Elder).
