Rangers have sold Martyn Waghorn to Ipswich Town today.

Rangers today confirmed that forward Martyn Waghorn has left the club, with the 27-year-old returning to England in order to sign for Championship club Ipswich Town.

The Gers landed Waghorn from Wigan Athletic in 2015, and he enjoyed a remarkable campaign during the 2015-16 season, smashing 28 goals in all competition as Rangers won promotion to the Scottish Premiership.

Martyn Waghorn of Rangerss controls the ball during the William Hill Scottish Cup semi-final match between Celtic and Rangers at Hampden Park on April 23, 2017 in Glasgow, Scotland.

However, Waghorn struggled last season, scoring just seven league goals before Pedro Caixinha brought in Dalcio, Daniel Candeias, Eduardo Herrera and Alfredo Morelos this summer, meaning Waghorn slipped down the pecking order.

Now, Waghorn has headed to Portman Road to reunite with ex-Rangers team-mate Joe Garner at Ipswich, with the Daily Mail reporting that the fee involved is £1million, giving the Gers a timely cash windfall ahead of the final weeks of the transfer window.

Manager Caixinha now has additional funds to bring in a new signing, and the Gers must focus their attention on spending that cash on Hearts winger Jamie Walker, who has been a target for Rangers all summer.

As reported by BBC Sport, Rangers have failed with two bids for the Hearts star, the latter totalling £650,000, with Hearts holding out for £1million for their star man despite him having less than a year left on his contract at Tynecastle.

Jamie Walker of Hearts celebrates his goal during the Ladbrokes Scottish Premiership match between Hearts and Celtic on August 7, 2016 in Glasgow, Edinburgh.

With Waghorn now gone and £1million extra in the bank, Rangers should now be looking to replace Barrie McKay by landing Walker, who hit 15 goals in all competitions last season for Hearts.

Adding another winger has to be a priority for Caixinha after McKay’s exit, and Walker is by far the best option available at just £1million, with Waghorn’s departure now giving Rangers the means to finally strike a deal after almost two months of chasing the wide man.
