Wolves made a move to sign Geoffrey Kondogbia from Atlético Madrid back in January as Julen Lopetegui aimed to improve his midfield department.
It was Fabrizio Romano – one of the most reliable journalists around – who claimed that Wolves attempted to sign the Atlético Madrid No.4 back at the start of 2023.
Now, Kondogbia will presumably be regretting the fact that a move to Molineux failed to materialise.
What’s the story?
Well, the Central Africa international has lost his place under Diego Simeone at the Wanda Metropolitano since Wolves made an approach.
Kondogbia has not played a single second of football since the end of January, finding himself stuck on the bench in six of the last seven La Liga games since the transfer window closed.
The one game in which the 30-year-old was not on the bench, a 1-1 draw against Real Madrid, he wasn’t even named in the squad.
Simeone had since addressed his decision to bench Kondogbia, saying: “We are not being so fair with Geoffrey because he’s working well.”
It is certainly a strange development, as Kondogbia was receiving a fair amount of game time at the start of the season.
The £18m man made ten starts in La Liga in the first half of the campaign, before his difficult start to 2023.
Wolves can surely convince Kondogbia
Romano added that Premier League clubs – presumably including Wolves – are monitoring Kondogbia ahead of a summer swoop for the defensive midfielder.
After losing his place under Simeone – despite ‘working well” in training – you would understand if the Wolves target wanted to leave the Spanish capital and was feeling slightly disillusioned.
Therefore, Lopetegui can surely convince the £107,000-a-week man to leave if there is still interest from Molineux.
Be sure to keep an eye on this situation, as Kondogbia surely won’t be happy about losing his place at Atlético Madrid.
