According to Fabrizio Romano, Rennes are set to announce the signing of Joe Rodon on a season-long loan from Tottenham.
Usually, the Wales international would return to N17 next summer when the temporary deal ends.
However, Romano has shared an interesting detail, which means Rodon’s appearance against Rangers on Saturday could turn out to be his final outing for Spurs.
What’s the story?
Well, Rennes have a purchase option as part of the loan agreement.
The Ligue 1 side can sign Rodon for €20m (£17m) in the summer of 2023 should he do well in France, and if a permanent deal does materialise, it will land Daniel Levy a small profit.
Spurs paid £11m to sign the 24-year-old from Swansea back in October 2020, although for whatever reason, he wasn’t given many opportunities to shine under José Mourinho.
Things didn’t improve under Nuno Espirito Santo or Antonio Conte, so Rodon has decided to take a step outside of the United Kingdom to further his career.
His decision will come as a blow to Everton, as Frank Lampard was hoping to sign the £24,000-a-week man.
Fulham also held talks to sign Rodon, so Marco Silva will now have to look elsewhere.
Tottenham have found Joe Rodon a great loan
In our view, this is a great move for all parties.
Rodon gets the chance to play Champions League football, which provides him with a platform to really develop his game up against the best forwards on the planet.
That will either see Tottenham receive an improved version of the Welshman next summer, or it will encourage Rennes to trigger the purchase option and land Spurs £6m in profit.
The only potential problem is that Rodon performs so well, his value far exceeds the £17m purchase option.
Whatever happens, Fabio Paratici deserves credit for arranging this deal.
