Paulinho had a night he would rather forget on Wednesday … watching Tottenham Hotspur and Corinthians lose 5-1.
Wednesday proved to be a disastrous day at the office once again for Tottenham Hotspur – as Manchester City gave them yet another of their customary Premier League thrashings.
Spurs went down 5-1 at White Hart Lane as City romped to the top of the table in some style.
It was a tough game for any of the currently injured Tottenham crop to watch if they were out of action for any reason.
One such player is Brazilian international Paulinho.
The midfield maestro arrived at the club from Corinthians in a £17 million move this summer – but despite glimpses of his undoubted quality he has also struggled with injury problems throughout the campaign.
At the moment he is on the side-lines with an ankle injury – but may be able to return to action this weekend.
But for Paulinho it was not just watching his current employers thrashing that hurt him this week.
He also had to watch his beloved Corinthians undergo similar punishment.
They lost to rivals Santos 5-1 as Arouca, Thiago Ribeiro and Gabriel ran riot at the Estadio Urbno Caldeira on Wednesday – and Paulinho had to sit through both hammerings:
“Do we really have to talk about football? It was a difficult day. A bad result at home, we had to win to stay in the hunt for the top four. Then, at night, I watched the Corinthians game. I had a great time at Corinthians, I’m still in touch with almost everybody at the club and I have lot of affection for the fans. However Tottenham is my current club and so it hurt more because there was nothing I could do to help.”
At least the Spurs defeat hurt more – so Paulinho seems to have his heart in the right place, even if his body isn’t at the moment.
His return to action will hopefully help bury this setback as soon as possible.
