Calum Chambers made an emotional and long-awaited return to senior football for Arsenal this week.
The 25-year-old played the final 20 minutes of Thursday night’s 4-1 win over Rapid Vienna in the Europa League.
Not only was it a memorable occasion because Arsenal were allowed to welcome 2,000 fans home after nine long months without them at the Emirates Stadium.
But it was also special because it was Chambers’s first game of 2020.
The former Southampton star, a £16 million signing in 2014, suffered knee ligament injury in one of Mikel Arteta’s first games in charge in North London, which ruled him out until Thursday night.
Here’s how Chambers reacted to the comeback game on Twitter yesterday evening:
Chambers’s return comes at a very good time for Arsenal.
This is a pretty hectic month for Arteta’s side and no doubt the Spanish manager will need as many defensive options as possible over the coming weeks.
Rotation is going to be key for Arsenal if they are to successfully negotiate this tricky period and Chambers coming back can only be a huge positive.
