Everton have grand ambitions but have struggled to find a suitable central defensive pairing in recent seasons, despite their lavish spending.
They have reportedly been on the trail of Manchester United defender Marcos Rojo for the previous two summers.
In August 2018, the Telegraph reported that the Toffees were keen on the Argentine, who they claimed at the time earns more than £120,000 per week at Old Trafford.
A year later, the Mail reported that a deadline day loan switch was on the cards, only for United to move the goalposts at the last minute.

Earlier this month, the Manchester Evening News quoted Rojo’s agent stating his client is ‘likely’ to be on the move this summer.
So would Everton be interested in a third shot at landing the man who came to England for £16 million (BBC) in 2014?
Jarred Branthwaite has come into contention in recent games, and the man signed for a reported £750,000 (Liverpool Echo) in January looks a calm, assured left-footed option.
He’s one for the future and looks a better bet than 30-year-old Rojo, who has been frozen out at United and failed to set the world alight on loan with Estudiantes.
Everton should steer clear of a third swoop this summer.
