Fredy Guarin has decided to stay with Inter Milan – and their recent moves i the transfer market played a big role in his decision.
Fredy Guarin became one of the most wanted men in the Premier League over the course of the past 12 months – with Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea and Manchester United all said to be looking at the Colombian midfield dynamo.
Andre Villas-Boas was a fan of his – so Spurs’ interest died with his departure from the club.
But Chelsea and United were being linked long into January.
The Blues were reportedly ready to spend big on his signature – while David Moyes had earmarked him for that troublesome central midfield role.
And at a quoted price of £15 million there was no wonder why.
Southampton were also said to be keen – but after a month in which he looked all set to leave the club nothing ever materialised.
In the end in fact he seemed happier than ever to be remaining at Inter Milan – and at the end of last month a new deal seemed to be on the cards.
Just over a week ago he had this to say on rumours he could stay at the club beyond the summer:
“If the president today proposes a lifetime contract with Inter I would not think twice. I’m starting to feel an Inter player and I hope to demonstrate that I should be.”
So he may not have been offered a deal for life – but Erick Thohir is expected to sign off on an extension until 2017 this month.
Now Guarin has made his intentions to stay at the Nerazzuri clear – and Manchester United’s departing captain has helped influence that decision:
” What happened in January was a watershed for me, after those days, I felt empowered to have so many fans supporting me…Therefore, in a few days I will also lengthen my contract with the club, I now only see my future here. The club is working on the renewal but it takes a bit of time. My agent will soon be in Milan and there will be no problems to sign until 2017. I’m Happy here and I will do everything to stay long. The purchases of Hernanes and Vidic are significant in this sense; both are established champions who will also be a stimulus for other players …”
Seems Guarin will definitely not be on his way to the Premier League any time soon.
