Tottenham Hotspur defender Matt Doherty insists that he would not have a problem at all with Jose Mourinho if he was to meet him again now, as per his comments to Irish Football Fan TV.

The lure of Mourinho

Doherty was one of Jose Mourinho’s first signings as Tottenham manager, and he was widely expected to come in and be first choice right-back.

However, he never truly found form under Mourinho and quickly found himself out of the team.

The £15 million defender (Guardian) has since struggled to break into Tottenham’s starting line-up, with Serge Aurier often favoured last term.

But Doherty insists that his relationship with Mourinho has not soured because he overlooked him.

Indeed, the Irish International claims that Mourinho remains the main reason why he signed for Tottenham in the first place.

“I knew Jose wanted me before I went to Tottenham. He was the main reason why I went. Because I wanted to play for him and work for him,” Doherty said.

“It didn’t quite work out. That’s a regret of mine that I have, that we didn’t manage to work out.

“But I would still have a good relationship with him now if I saw him.

“When he came calling it was impossible to say no.”

Still no change of fortunes

Doherty is now working under Nuno, a manager who he has had success with in the past.

However, even under Nuno he hasn’t truly been able to shine to date.

Tottenham have also now brought in Emerson Royal, which has led to Doherty slipping further down the pecking order.

The Spurs right-back should get plenty of game time over the International break though, with Ireland set to be in action twice over the coming week.
