Shay Given and Michael Owen praised Harry Kane for attempting to lob Emiliano Martinez during Tottenham’s 2-1 win against Aston Villa on Sunday.
The former goalkeeper shared Kane’s quick-thinking proves why there was talk of him possibly leaving for ‘£150 million’ this summer, whilst Owen claimed it was ‘great technique’, as they told Premier League Productions (03/10/21 at 2:55 pm).
Tottenham were awarded a free-kick near the centre-circle in the first half, when Kane noticed Villa’s man between the sticks off his line.
And from about 40 yards out, Kane, who is yet to score a Premier League goal this season, lobbed Martinez, but he got back in time to save the effort.
The England captain is lacking that bite in front of goal, as he searches for his first league goal, but one thing that hasn’t evaded him is his footballing brain.
During his playing days, Given would have no doubt faced many situations where opposition players try to lob him, but he liked what he saw from the player, as Owen also shared his thoughts.
“It’s actually a great save, in the end,” said Given. “You are looking ‘is the ball still moving?’ But I think it just stopped and Harry’s stood up and hit.
“That’s what he can do. He’s a fantastic player. There was talk of £150 million in the summer, and that’s the reason why.”
Owen added: “Great effort. Great vision. Great technique to try and hit it like that. But Martinez just got his claws on it.”

Kane had a number of easier opportunities, including going through one v one, to score on Sunday, but the luck just isn’t with him.
Spurs fans will be hoping that he brings some goals back with him when he goes off for international duty next week.
Perhaps a change of scenery and linking up with different players will start Kane’s engine because he does have a Golden Boot to defend.
And, at this rate, the likes of Mohamed Salah are going to run away with it like a steam train.
